Umbraco Backoffice Documentation

Content Transfer

All the content should be created and edited on the Development environment and then transferred to Stage and Live environments, so that all the environments would be consistent and coordinated. This is done so that everyone - Developers, Testers, Product, Marketing and Social Media teams, Chat Hosts and our Players will have the same experience on our website and will see the same results on the page. Content shouldn't be edited on Stage and Live environments as it will be overwritten by the changes from the previous environment (either Development or Stage) after the next content transfer is done.

Page content

This page is split into two parts:

What is content transfer?

Content transfer is an action in which the content - pages, media, layout and/or website changes, are transferred between two environments (Development, Stage, Live). This is done through the Umbraco Backoffice on the Workspaces section and can be done by users who have either Publisher or Promotional Content Creator access to the Umbraco project. Other users will need to send the content changes for approval and ask Publisher to release their changes.

How to transfer content to Live environment?

In this section we will transfer a bingo60 page that we created on How to create a new empty page? guide page from the Development environment to Live environment. This will require us to first transfer the page from Development to Staging environment and then transfer the page from Staging to Live environment. During the content transfer process, the page/content always has to go through every environment when done correctly.

Before transferring the page make sure that the page:

  • Has Disable Route toggle disabled so that the page would be displayed on the tombola website.
  • Has SEO Meta Content, such as Meta Title and Meta Description, added.

Step 1. To transfer the bingo60 page, we will right click on the bingo60 node in the Umbraco Backoffice and select Queue for transfer... button.

Step 2. Clicking Queue for transfer... button will open up a content transfer view. Here we have two options - Set date and Queue for transfer. In this case we want to transfer the page without setting a transfer date, thus, we will click the green Queue for transfer button.

See Additional information on Step 2 section at the bottom of the page for information about the additional available settings when transferring content.

Step 3. After clicking the green Queue for transfer button the bingo60 page will be put in a transfer queue. A transfer queue is a list of content that is reserved to be transferred during the next content transfer. We can put as many pages and content to the transfer queue as we like before transferring the content to Stage environment in Step 4. Thus, if multiple changes were made on the Development environment, it is recommended to do a single content transfer by putting all the content in a transfer queue (follow Steps 1-2) before moving to Step 4.

After we put the content to the transfer queue, we need to open the Workspaces view to transfer the changes to the Stage environment. This can be done by clicking grey Open transfer queue button.

Step 4. Then, on the Workspaces view, we will be shown a list of all the content in the transfer queue and the four available environments - Local (this is not used), Development, Stage (Staging) and Live. Here we can check all the content that we will be transferring to the next environment. If some content was put in a transfer queue but is missing from the list, click the Refresh queue button. To clear the transfer queue click the Clear queue button, this will remove everything from the transfer queue.

In this case, we want to transfer the bingo60 page to the Stage environment, thus, we will click the green Transfer to Staging button. This will start a content transfer process to the Stage environment.

Workspaces view can be found by clicking on the Content (just above the Website node and below the Content header bar button) and clicking on Workspaces button in the middle of the screen.

Step 5. If the content transfer succeeds, we will get a Transfer complete screen (as shown below). If not, an error will appear in it's place.

In case of an error, the best course of action is to check that all of the content is correctly setup and try doing a content transfer again. If this doesn't help, contact one of the members of theĀ Onboarding team who will be happy to help.

Step 6. After completing five content transfer steps, our bingo60 page has reached the Stage environment together with all the media content inside - images and/or videos (see Additional information on Media transfer section below). However, we still need to transfer the page from Stage to Live. To do this, we need to go to the Stage environment and follow the same Steps 1-5 on the Stage environment Umbraco Backoffice.

The easiest way to access the Stage environment is to click on the Staging button and clicking Open umbraco backoffice link below. This will open the Stage environment Umbraco Backoffice in a new browser window. After getting to the Stage environment Umbraco Backoffice the content transfer Steps 1-5 can be repeated to fully transfer the content to the Live environment.

Additional information on Step 2. Setting a transfer date. When we want to set a specific date for when the page will be transferred to the next environment (a date when the content goes live), we can select the Set date button. This will let us choose a date and time for when the page should be transferred and go live. Selecting this option follows the same process for transferring the content as selecting the green Queue for transfer button. However, this option should only be used when transferring the content from Stage to Live environment.

Additional information on Step 2. Including all the items below the node. After clicking the Queue for transfer button another option might appear on the content transfer view - Include all items below. Selecting this option before clicking the green Queue for transfer button will put all the pages below the page that is selected for transfer into a transfer queue. Selecting this option follows the same process for transferring the content as selecting the green Queue for transfer button. However, it's recommended not to use this option to transfer the content, it's better to individually select the nodes that need to be transferred instead.

Additional information on Media transfer. There is no need to additionally add all the images and/or videos from the Media section that were used to create a page to the transfer queue when doing a content transfer because it gets transferred automatically during the page transfer.
